Alligator Blood and Catalyst

Queensland star Alligator Blood has once again led all the way to top the public voting for the $5 million All-Star Mile.

Around 135,000 votes were received for the All-Star Mile voting this year, which is about 30,000 less than last year, even though voting was also open to those in New Zealand for the first time.

With voting closed and the first ten runners announced today, Alligator Blood polled over 18,000 votes to clearly lead the voting to secure a berth in the race. Alligator Blood has been installed as the $5.00 second favourite at Sportsbet for the race, behind Catalyst who was sixth in the polling but is the $4.60 for the big race on March 14th.

Golden Eagle winner Kolding was third in the voting with a little over 10,000 votes, and is third in the betting at $6.00, while Kiwi Melody Belle was the second-most popular vote getter with almost 12,000 votes, and is $8.00 to win the race.

Gold Fields finished on the voting bubble in 11th place with 4416 votes, while Begood Toya Mother (12th), Black Heart Bart (13th), Galaxy Raider (14th) and Mandela Effect (15th) also fell short of making the field.

Five wildcards are still to be announced which will make up the 15-horse field. Alabama Express did not make the cut in voting, but is $21 for the race and Alizee is $26.

Racing Victoria has pledged match one dollar for every vote received which means a total donation of $135,097 to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

“Based on feedback from fans we changed the conditions of The All-Star Mile from year one and we’ve seen the quality of the top 10 evolve with the number of Group 1 winners increasing from four to six and the average rating for older horses lift from 98 to 105,” said Racing Victoria’s Executive General Manager, Greg Carpenter.

“Given the cult following Alligator Blood has developed through his performances on the racetrack, it was no surprise to see him finish on top but what we perhaps didn’t expect to see was just how popular he has become, with more than 6,600 votes separating him from Melody Belle in second place.”

Sportsbet’s Rich Hummerston also confirmed the support for Alligator Blood with punters.

“We knew that Alligator Blood was popular with punters, but this is a massive show of admiration. Punters have been looking for a horse to take over from Winx and the Gator could be the one to step up,’’ said Hummerston.
